IN your news item about the renovation of the cliff defences along Caldy beach (Globe, March 19) planners say that it "will not spoil the appearance" nor "harm the character" of this "special landscape."
Sadly, this formerly sandy beach is still strewn with limestone rocks and stones washed out from the existing rock-armour by tidal action.
Much of this loose rubble has become firmly embedded into the beach, and has changed its character greatly over the past 20 years.
Further work of this kind could make this rock-strewn beach even worse, and strict controls and supervision will be essential to ensure that this does not happen again.
