PUPILS from Clare Mount Specialist Sports College and Woodchurch High School teamed up to take on rivals from Chadderton and Liverpool as they brought the London 2012 Legacy to life.

The youngsters were taking part in the BWB North West Inclusive Zone Basketball (IZB) Schools Competition at the University of Central Lancashire.

Combining two of the 2012 Games' hottest sports – wheelchair and running basketball – IZB enables players with a physical disability to represent their schools alongside their non-disabled peers in a fast-paced game that is on the rise in schools across the country.

With not only the regional title to play for but a highly coveted spot in the national finals, the Wirral team shone throughout the action-packed day as they competed against Radclyffe School, Chadderton, and Halewood Academy, Liverpool.

First up on court was a nail-biter between The Radclyffe School and Halewood Academy, the former edging out the win by 1-0.

Looking to build upon the victory, Radclyffe School then came out firing in their second game, overcoming a gritty performance from the combined Clare Mount Specialist Sports College and Woodchurch High School team to take a 5-0 victory.

This meant that the second final spot came down to a fantastic battle as the Clare Mount Specialist Sports College and Woodchurch High School team took on Halewood Academy in a real thriller.

The match ended with the teams tied on two points apiece; Halewood Academy therefore claiming the final spot in the gold medal game.

British wheelchair basketball education development officer Oli Mitchell said: "It's fantastic to see the tournament returning again to the region, and year on year seeing schools getting stuck in to the action.

"The students competing for their schools – several of them for the very first time – performed outstandingly both on and off the court, and the number of schools consistently entering this annual competition is a great testament to the amazing coverage that not just wheelchair basketball, but disability sport is receiving at the moment.

"We definitely hope to see all the teams again next year."
