A MAN has been arrested on suspcion of murder following an incident in West Kirby on Tuesday night.

Police were called to a house on Paton Close, just before 9.40pm, following reports that a man had been assaulted.

On arrival, they found a man in his 40s with stab wounds. He was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital by paramedics and pronounced dead a short time later.

Police are in the process of confirming his identity and tracing his next of kin.

An Home Office post mortem examination will be carried out to establish the cause of death.

At this stage, the motive for the incident is unclear and detectives are working to establish the full circumstances.

A 38-year-old man from Birkenhead was arrested on suspicion of murder earlier this morning in connection with the incident.

He has been taken to a police station on Merseyside where he is being questioned.

Paton Close remains cordoned off whilst a forensic examination of the area is carried out and house-to-house enquiries are being conducted.

High visibility patrols have also been stepped up in the area to reassure residents.
