COUNCILLOR Sylvia Hodrien has resigned her Upton ward seat on Wirral Council because of illness.

A by-election has been called to fill the vacancy.

Council leader Cllr Phil Davies applauded her contribution to local government.

He said: ‘This is extremely sad news for us on the Labour group, and for Wirral, as Cllr Hodrien was proving a dedicated public servant.

“She was only elected in May 2012, but since then, has served on the council’s excellence overview and scrutiny committee, licensing, health and safety and general purposes committee, pensions committee, and the transformation and resources policy and performance committee.

"Many people in her ward will also know her from her work in the community, and as a member of the Woodchurch Community Centre joint management committee.

"Our thoughts are with Cllr Hodrien, and with her family and friends at this difficult time.’
