HUNDREDS of children and families are expected to converge on Birkenhead Park next Wednesday as part of National Play Day.

The themed event, organised by Wirral Play Council, in conjunction with Wirral Council's youth and play Service, calls on everyone to help ensure the places where children play and hang out are great places to play.

The celebration event, based at Birkenhead Park Pavilion, starts at 11am and finishes 4pm. It will be opened by mayor, Cllr Dave Mitchell.

On the day, there will be a climbing wall, water slide, drum circle, straw bales to play on, circus skills, tug 'o' war, sports, body zorbs, inflatables, Surestart activities, a 'Playful Places' gallery, face painting, Playschemes' Talent Show and much more.

Each summer, Wirral Play Council operates 20 free open-access play schemes.

All children and young people attending need to register on the day before participating in the activities. For further information call Wirral Play Council 0151 650 0030.
