Taylor Swift and the Jonas Brothers were among the winners at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards.

The annual ceremony is voted for by fans aged 13 and over and features categories in film, TV, music, sport and social media.

Pop superstar Swift won the first-ever icon award and used her acceptance speech to call for gender equality and announce the release date of a new single.

The 29-year-old was introduced to the stage by Alex Morgan, who won the World Cup with the US women’s football team in July.

Swift backed the team in their campaign for equal pay with the men’s side and told fans: “Please, please, please support her and her teammates because this isn’t over yet. It’s not resolved.”

She told viewers to “get online” and discuss the issue, adding: “Let people know how you feel about it because what happened to them is unfair. It’s happening everywhere and they are heroes and icons for standing up.”

Swift also told fans to “stand up for yourself”, days after Kid Rock was widely condemned for a “sexist tweet” claiming the pop star was only supporting left-leaning causes to further her career in Hollywood.

She then announced the release date for the next single from her upcoming album. Title track Lover will arrive on August 16, a week before the album.

Other big winners on the night included the Jonas Brothers, who closed out the show after winning the decade award.

Kevin, Joe and Nick took to the stage to accept the prize, which organisers said celebrates their development over the last 10 years.
