The latest version of the Subaru Impreza has a new, powerful 2.5-litre engine and a much beefier exhaust.

Admittedly, first impressions of the WRX STI Impreza may have you thinking ‘chav heaven’, but to Subaru traditionalists and rally enthusaists, this Impreza is a real joy to drive.

The model I drove has a heavily-revised new 300 PS turbocharged 2.5 litre ‘boxer’ engine, a totally new platform and suspension plus an even more advanced symmetrical all-wheel drive system. Power is now 300 PS at 6,000 rpm with torque of 300 lb ft at 4,000 rpm.

Top speed is 155.3 mph with a 0-60 mph time of only 4.8 seconds.

Maximum power for the standard WRX is an identical 230 PS to the previous model but now at a lower 5,200 rpm instead of 5,600 rpm.

Torque (pulling power) is also the same as before at 236 lb ft but now at a more accessible 2,800 rpm instead of 3,600 rpm.

Major improvements such as these have been achieved thanks to a new turbocharger and intercooler with the oil pump, sparking plugs and tumble generating valve all being revised for greater efficiency.

With less than 28 miles to the gallon, this model is a little thirstier than I would have liked, but you don’t buy a car like this for economy, but very much for the pure driving pleasure.

This model comes with a nice set of 17" alloys, six airbags, xenon lamps, climate control, cruise control and leather/alcantara sport seats.
