It’s clean and it’s green – it’s the latest Volkswagen Passat estate Bluemotion.

Powered by a 110bhp 2.0-litre common rail diesel engine, the new version features a five-speed manual box with longer gear ratios in third, fourth and fifth, a 15mm lower ride height and a more aerodynamic grille.

As with its predecessor, the engine delivers 184lb ft of torque.

This model also features the automatic stop/start system, which is cropping up on lots of cars now. This is when, at the traffic lights say, the driver depresses the clutch, goes into neutral and the engine switches off, springing to life as soon as you go back into gear.

The Passat BlueMotion 2 is the first contemporary Volkswagen to feature this system.

Some aerodynamic changes have the effect of reducing drag on all BlueMotion models, including changes to the front spoiler below the front bumper and small intakes for the engine cooling system.

Ride quality is good and standard equipment in the Passat includes driver and passenger airbags, curtain and front seat side airbags and side impact protection. The front passenger airbag can be switched off if you want to fit a baby seat in. The rear seats also feature Isofix child seat fasteners.

There is also stability control, brake assist, electronic brake-pressure distribution (EBD), electronic differential lock (EDL) and traction control. There’s also remote central locking, an alarm and remote tailgate unlocking. Cruise control comes at an added cost. The Passat scored five Euro NCAP stars for adult occupant protection.
