Nell Highet

NELL HIGHET Formerly Bourne, Née James Nell's husband David and all the family wish to thank all who attended her celebration of life, filling the Landican Chapel to over-flowing a true sign of how much she was loved. Special mention must be made of Jane Grimes, Civil Celebrant, who conducted a beautiful and uplifting service with such dignity and compassion, Jon Barton organist, for his fine playing of English and Welsh hymns, the congregation for their lusty singing and all concerned at Charles Stephens Funeral Directors [especially Rachel and 'little' Richard] whose quiet professionalism and kind understanding was there to support us from the moment Nell passed away. And thanks to the ever-attentive staff at Grove House, Wallasey, where we gathered after the service to share happy memories of Nell. We were overwhelmed by the large number of messages of sympathy, all of which brought us comfort and we thank everyone who made a donation to Alzheimer's Research UK in memory of Nell whose final years were progressively dominated by vascular dementia. Words are scarcely enough to express our gratitude to all those who gave loving support and care to Nell during her long illness among them are . . . Matron Maureen and all the team at Westhaven Nursing Home, Hoylake, whose care transcended the professional and became, movingly, an expression of their affection for Nell, especially as she approached the end of her life. The visiting care-givers from Home Instead, Oxton, who were so fondly there for Nell [even on Christmas Day] until the time came for her to move into full-time residential and nursing care. Liz and her lovely ladies at The Lonsdale Trust Centre in Wallasey where Nell spent many happy days until she became too ill to attend. The doctors and nurses from Townfield Health Centre, Prenton, and latterly from Marine Lake Medical Practice, West Kirby, who eased Nell's pain so that she could depart in peace. Dr Paul Sherrard and all the team, especially Kirsty, at Moreton Dental Care, who professionally and personally addressed the issues faced by patients who can no longer attend to their own dental hygiene. Peter Ruddy her chiropodist and the many professionals from the NHS and Social Services and other support organisations in the community who helped in a myriad of ways. And young Amy who would take Nell out for 'pamper' days and fun days and who became like family to us. Nor will we ever forget the various forms of support from Nell's old teaching colleagues at Poulton Primary and golfing pals at Wirral Ladies and other good friends and neighbours old and new some of whom, week by week, would visit Nell at home and then in Westhaven and who by their presence would bring her happiness. Our friends Nigel and Fiona and Alison gave unstintingly of their time to bring us practical help when we most needed it. And there are so many more you know who you are. A final note from Nell's husband, David: Over the five years I looked after Nell at home, before she went into Westhaven, I came to understand that the carer needs care, too. And I received it aplenty. From the James and Highet families, naturally, and all the good folk mentioned above. But also from the lads with whom I went to school in the 1950s. From friends made during a lifetime in newspaper journalism, television and corporate communications. From pals in the Round Table movement. From my good old rambling companions in the Tuesday Walking and Talking Society. And many more. Thank you all. It's my round.
