Not surprised that plan to build Sainsbury's in Greasby was approved

I AM angry about the approval for the Sainsbury’s development in Greasby, but not in the least surprised.

As a pensioner in the community I have long ago realised that we no longer live in a democracy.

It’s all about large companies increasing market share and realistically this is at the expense of small companies losing theirs.

I love Greasby as it is now – it has a village feel – and please tell me what amenities are not already available?

We are told it will create jobs but I question at what cost to other businesses and their employees.

Politicians tell us it is important to vote, both nationally and locally. Is it any wonder that many of us are cynical about our ability to influence anything in today’s society?

Even on a local basis we see councillors or MPs beaming at us from photographs in the local press or leaflets because they have allegedly influenced something such as getting a few potholes filled in.

The same councillors and MPs that now stare out at us saying “they” feel let down!

As a member of the community I feel let down by them, and feel very sorry for the smaller business owners and their staff in the village.

The very least we can do now is to continue to favour the existing shops with our custom.

Rod Collyer, Greasby.

Planning can only be witheld on certain grounds, so these can't have applied, therefore approval HAS to be granted (or would be anyway on appeal) so really no-one should be surprised BUT what will be shocking is just how many people will use this supposed 'un-needed' store - just like the store on Moreton Cross with it's ridiculous access that should not have been allowed but is always mad busy.

I agree with the comments about lack of democracy.

If the 'will' of the people is to reject the building of a Sainsburys, via a petition of 8,500 names AND had been rejected twice by council planners, then it should not go ahead.

The so-called 'elected representatives' have shown a complete disregard for the people of Greasby and surrounding area by surrendering to the big supermarkets (as per usual)

I know its a long way off but roll on 2014 and the local elections. If the 'mainstream' parties won't (and obviously don't) act on behalf of their constituents then its time to vote someone else in...like UKIP...its time for a change!
