Do readers remember Spitfire that crashed in Wirral?

I WONDER if any of your readers remember the Spitfire that crashed in Birkenhead Park on October 14, 1942?

An American pilot took off from RAF Hawarden, got into difficulties and bailed out over Liverpool but the Spitfire crashed in Birkenhead Park.

This anniversary will be marked by a memorial service on the site in Birkenhead Park at 2.30pm, on Sunday, October 14, followed by light refreshments at the Royal British Legion in Park Road East.

That evening there will be concertby the Band of The Royal Air Force Regiment at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton, Tickets are £10 each and all proceeds to the Poppy Appeal.

For more information you can contact Birkenhead Park Visitors Centre on 0151 652 5197 or e-mail birkenheadpark@wirral.gov.uk Steve Hutchinson, Vice-Chairman, Royal British Legion, Birkenhead Branch.
