Thought Wirral councillors would have learned lesson

JUST when you should be reasonably able to think that the councillors of Wirral have learnt their lesson about tinkering with schemes that work well, they once again surprise the residents of Wirral with another hare-brained scheme that defies comprehension and illustrates the level of their total incompetence.

It was recently reported that Wirral Council taxpayers had forked out over £250,000 clearing fly-tipped rubbish last year, so what do councillors then propose - a charge for garden rubbish collections? What will this cause?

The breakdown of a service that has worked well and efficiently and has seen recycling levels rise substantially, fly-tipping will become even more prevalent and garden rubbish will end up in landfill again having been deposited in green bins to avoid a charge.

It is stated that only 112,000 homes benefit from the scheme but it is used responsibly and effectively, and therefore benefits everyone in Wirral by improving the environment and improving recycling, based on the distorted councillors’ logic will families who have additional green bins be expected to pay an additional charge for their excessive non- recyclable rubbish, will credits be given to those who do not fill their green bins each week as clearly they are being responsible so should be rewarded?

It’s about time councillors started directing their efforts to schemes that make a significant improvement to failing front-line services across the Wirral, there has been much publicity about those over the last 12 months but little or no evidence of any improvements.

I have watched, across the years, as rubbish mounts, week on week, in back entries. Nothing is done about tenants/residents who fly-tip; nothing is done by the Council apart from sending a cart out once a month to clear the rubbish, which must cost a small fortune across the years. I doubt Councillors are interested as the only time we see them is when there's about to be an election. Unless and until tenants/residents are forced to pay for their mess, the situation will not change. It's not as if it's the Coucillor's own money now, is it?
