No need for one-way traffic at North Parade
10:32am Wednesday 8th August 2012 in Letters
THE letter referring to “One Way Danger” raised a very valid point but I would like to look at the other side of the issue and ask is there any reason these days why North Parade cannot be opened to two-way traffic?
In the past, when Hoylake outdoor pool was an immensely popular attraction, there would be hundreds of cars parked every single day down the length of the promenade along its left-hand side coming from King’s Gap.
This made it an absolute necessity for a one-way system.
However, now the baths are just a distant memory, Marine Gardens (apart from the bowling green) has become little more than a barren dust bowl, the band stand demolished long ago and the promenade cheaply resurfaced by the council with an ugly screed, day trippers understandably have no reason to visit Hoylake seafront.
So North Parade is virtually deserted all-year-round except on the odd occasion when we have a sunny weekend.
As these are as rare as hen’s teeth, what reason is there not to scrap the one-way system altogether?

I am very much of the opinion that if it is not broke, do not fix it. The North Parade works very well one-way and that is how it should stay, if anything, making it two-way would increase traffic, confusion and accidents.
In relation to another persons comments; if somebody drives at you the wrong way up a one way street, why would you avoid them, just stop and let them have the accident.

In the meantime, in my view, the one-way system removes conflicting moves and makes it moderately safer for pedestrians.
