Spam calls are a nuisance

REGARDING the story about spam phone calls in last week's Globe ('Beware software scam').

We too have received a number of such calls, sometimes with numbers that show with a 1471 as being "002" or the like.

Alongside the advice given I would like to add also that a good method is to see if, when answering the call, there is a response instantly or not.

If there is a gap of more than a second or two, it is most likely because an automated system is about to connect your number to an operative at the other end, and you have that period to terminate the call before it gets going.

Option 2 is to just put the phone down somewhere and leave it until they get bored and hang up (I've done this as well).

It may be a pain, and an extra expense, but most phone companies have call blocking features so checking out these also may be a good idea, even though they won't stop every spam call alas.

Or you could register with the Telephone Preference Service. This will filter out most, though not ALL such calls. If you've had previous dealings with a company then TPS registration won't stop them calling you, but it should stop those unsolicited calls.
