How times have changed with littering

WHILE out on a lovely countryside walk recently we met two chaps in uniform picking up litter along the grass verges.

We stopped to have a chat and to thank them for their dedicated work.

We chatted about how times have changed and how when we were children we would never even consider dropping litter, it was just an un-written rule.

Where have we gone wrong as a society in Britain - having to pay thousands of men and women to keep our towns and the country side tidy?

European countries manage to be litter free, as it is still socially unacceptable.

People challenge others without fear of reprisal. Why can't we do the same?

Come on Government and schools ... bring it back for our children's future world, otherwise we are going to end up living in a dump!

Maybe an hour a week out of lessons in the community getting much needed exercise and fresh air to pick up litter, helping youngster to realize how important it is, will mean we can save a fortune for our councils having to pay people to do it.

Or use some our young offenders to be supervised to do the same.

Please have the confidence to challenge people, if spotted dropping litter ... together we can make our world a better place.

Julie Harris, Upton.

I dont think we're any messier as individuals than we once were. Part of the problem is that there is now much more stuff we can buy which is in packaging that we can throw away. The non return of litter bins in some places following their removal after the Warrington bombs has contributed to the problem, and of course there are and always will be ignorant people who have no respect for their environment. Litter has been around a long time: I well remember being frightened as a child by the TV adverts of the Sixties in which the lions in Trafalgar Square demanded that we "Pick it Up!". This is not a new issue by any means so lets not get it out of proportion.

Sorry bickyboy, I disagree. I hate the streets filled with chewing gum, cigarette tips, spittle and in some areas dog mess. The first two are my biggest pet hate. It is not disproportionate to want to sort this out. There are other Countries where that problem is not so prevalent due to a more civilised population. I do agree with you that the problem of other litter is down to the Councils and Government decisions based on the bomb issues of almost 20 years ago along with them not wanting to spend the money and superstores/shops pre-packaging everything.
