Wirral's dog-fouled pavements are a public health risk

I have to confess to having become rather bored with the letters about dog muck on your letters page each week.

The problem, thought I, had improved out of all recognition since the days when Wallasey was the unofficial “Canine Excrement Capital” of Merseyside; so why didn’t these people stop moaning and do something useful with their lives?

Well, an incident the other day certainly jarred me out of my complacency.

I arrived home in darkness from work, took not a dozen steps from my car to my front door, let myself in, wiped my feet diligently on the mat and sat down in the lounge for a well earned rest before proceeding with the evening's chores.

All at once a noxious stench assailed my nostrils, and sure enough when I examined my shoes one of them was caked with dog muck.

Clearly my smug dismissal of the complaints of those who continue to encounter the effects of this nasty phen-omenon was very much out of place.

And where is our ruling council with regard to this issue? My question is this: Is not the matter of public health a duty of the local council, and if that council is failing in its duty shouldn’t we, as citizens, rather than making individual complaints in the media, be demanding as one that they take a far more pro-active stand against those who are leaving their pets’ excrement all over our pavements?

David Elsam, Wallasey.

I totally agree with dave elsams comments. More should be done regards fouling of pavements. In the trafalgar road area I have to dance around the dog muck to get to the shops. Where is the Co-op? just follow the trail of dog dirt along stringhey road. At least a few notices re fouling of pavements should be put on lamp-posts. Maybe W.B.C. could instal some ctv cameras. How could the cost be met? Maybe they could cancel their "Sandwich budget" and take their own packed lunches!!! Just a thought,

There's a stretch of pavement in Euston Grove in Oxton which is avoided by many pedestrians - they prefer to walk in the road!.. and I'm no expert but it looks like the work of just one dog on a daily basis... and a very big dog too!

No.9, I walk my dog in Euston Grove and totally agree with you. I cannot stand it when a dog owner leaves their dog's mess behind. As I always have a pocketful of 'poo bags' with me, I would take great pleasure in picking it up and following whoever it is back to their home and depositing it through their letterbox! People like that give us responsible dog owners a bad name.

Even though I look in the notices section every week I must have missed it when Vale Park in New Brighton was declared a dogs toilet.
