Common sense goes in the Wirral wheelie bin

Common sense has gone in the bin. It’s just a shame that the recycling collection guys won’t collect it.

I live on a road that hasn’t had its grey bins collected since before Christmas.

Today is the day. There are plastic bags full of recycling, extra boxes, you name it and it's on our street next to the full grey bins. I have just sat here and watched the collection drivers ignore it all and just collect the grey bins.

I thought ahead, knew they would have a health and safety excuse as to why they couldn’t pick up a plastic bag or box.

So I put all my extra recycling into the empty brown bin. Smart, hey? No. They ignored the nice letter I put on the top of it and carried on down the street. So I ran after them in my slippers. Apparently it is a sackable offense to empty a brown bin. “Sorry love, I’m not getting the sack for you” I was told. I asked them to ring the supervisor. They said the same thing - can only empty grey bins. So I emptied all my brown bin recycling into my now empty grey bin and ran down the street with it and put it with the others still to be collected. This is apparently acceptable!

I have now telephoned the council and complained. When I asked them what I should have done with my five weeks of recycling that wouldn’t fit in my grey bin, I was told that I could have taken it to the tip.

Now silly me, that is what I thought I paid my council taxes for.

While I have some sympathy for the climatic problems of late. Taking a heavy lorry down an ice hill lined with parked cars is VERY dangerous. However there was no snow or ice on Friday when OUR bins were ignored.
I hear there is consideration being given to putting park keeping out to contract. Apparently to save money.
How can a contractor working for profet do the job cheaper than the in house management?
Also once the work has been contracted out the Council loses control of the service. As demonstrated last month.
Clearly the answer is to sort out Weak Management within the council and bite the bullet and cut back on services we are unable to afford.
Come on cut the spin councillors and give us the hard unpalatable facts.
The electorate can then grow up and decide if they need some services so much that they are prepared to pay a higher community charge.
We blame the politicians for not telling the truth and no longer trust them. BUT WHY have they behaved like this? Could it be in response to public demand? I see no future for this democracy unless there is a root and branch re examination of the way we operate. THAT is both the politician AND the voter.
The man I most respect in this area is Frank Field, although I am not a constituent. I would appreciate HIS view on this. Frankly He might be the badly needed voice of reason and leadership back to sanity

With respect to the writer of commonnsense. I too can sympathise with her case, as our bins were left untouched for five weeks from the 10th and 17th of December. Yet there was snow and ice for one week, i.e the 7th January. In fairness, too the recycling collectors, they are not suppose to empty grey bins full of carrier bags, whether the bags are full of recycling material. Refuse in grey bins must be loose. Streetscene advised during this weather to keep recycled rubbish in a dry place until it can be collected. I'd like them to tell us where, when we only have one bin with five weeks of rubbish.

On the question of mixing grey and green bin refuse in the ice ag3e backlog I think there is a valid excuse. However I do believe if you want a good service under control of the council it should be kept in house.
Our green bins (and our neighbours) were missed last week and it seems our council officers are powerless to get them to come back and do the job properly.
IF a contractor can do a job more cheaply than the council and still show a profit, I suggest there is a managerial deficiency in the Council.
Stop employing idiots with degrees and employ project Managers with a proven competence record.

Ivor, with respect , can I tell you how external contractors can provide more cost effective services than the council themselves
1. Part of the whole cost of running the council is apportioned to the contract. Therefore do you remember the half million quid to be spent on butties, well yes, even part of that cost will be inbuilt into the price.
2. Council employees via their unions tend to negotiate higher wages than the equivalent man in the street, thus keeping wages higher than would normally be expected. Additionally a proportion of all the over paid officers salaries including the £135,000 that Maddox is paid and the £35,000 expenses that Foulkes is paid.
There are other reasons but I think you may get the drift as to why council operated services cost so much.
