Spat between Wirral councillors was rather juvenile

I cannot help feeling that the current spat in Wirral Borough Council between the Labour Party and Conservative councillor Dennis Knowles (ex- Labour member for Seacombe Ward) is all rather juvenile.

I was present at Wallasey Town Hall when Cllr Knowles is alleged to have made the “cut-throat gesture” towards his former Labour colleagues.

Councillor Knowles, who denies the gesture, suggests in fact that he was drawing his finger across his mouth in an attempt to silence vocal criticism from the benches opposite.

It strikes me that the Standards Board for England should have better things to do than adjudicating on an issue which may result in measure-ment being taken of the distance between a councillor’s mouth and his chin.

Surely in the aftermath of the notorious libraries affair and with the advent of further recession induced reduction in government funding to local authorities the leader of the council would be better engaged in attending to affairs of state instead of petty bickering over party defections.

Cllr David Kirwan, Prospective Independent MP for Wirral West.

I agree , these councillors are acting like nothing more than big kids and are making a big issue over nothing. It is just a show of petulance by bully foulkes because of knowles' defection - i hope he really didn't take to heart the gesture(as if he would)

Some more common sense from Mr Kirwan! Do we really have to put up with this juvenile behavior... do we really have to pay for it?

Do we really need 66 councillors - when many (with gloriuos exceptions) are of poor quality, coupled with the fact that people are leaving the Wirral in droves - with a net loss of around 80,000 per year at the moment.
Less councillors of a higher quality Please !.

I have been informed that 100 senators actually run the USA a vast country with a population that dwarfs ours. Why do we need 66 Councillors plus over 6oo MPs to run our small patch.
We have too many Councillors, about 20 would be more than adequate.
We also have too many Government MPs about 50 would be more than enough for any democracy. There goes that magic word DOMOCRACY, pity we dont have it.
Lets get shot of the whole lot, roll on the elections.

None of them come out with any credit. Cllr Knowles was more than happy to go along with the library closures up until the last minute, whilst Foulkes lost touch with the electorate a very long time ago.

Here, Here Hugo..
20 Councillors instead of 66 - that is also probably a good approximation of the number of quality councillors we have - @ 20 !!!!

Wirral Borough Council split the entire peninsular into two halves when it comes to Refuse Collection. The opperatives visit every single road, street, avenue, lane, and close, just about every two weeks. There are less binmen than councillors. When was the last time your local elected councillor visited where you live, asked you what you would like to see happen with your money. or even to say Hello this is what I have been working on for your behalf, whilst recieving generous expences and fees, or visiting other location in luxury style, so ypour life is a little bit better?

Hugo - Brilliant 1 - I love that fact..!

Also the binmen have 'upped their game' over the last few years - when are the councillors going to get off the gravy train 'up their game' and do their job to such a similar high standard...?
