More oppressive toys

Your picture on the front page of the Wirral Globe, on Wednesday, June 24, reminded me of another of Wirral Council’s favourite oppressive toys which it wastes our money on.

The sooner the white Smart spy car is cut up and laid to rest at Woodside [with the U-boat] the better.

Or even better still, dump them both in the sea and let’s celebrate Cammell Laird’s achievements at Woodside instead of Hitler’s.

Now that would be a smart move!

Dave Evennett, West Kirby.

Sorry but I dont understand how the U-boat celebrates Hitler?

I understand how it encourages tourists to Liverpool to visit the Wirral.

Slumdog - "Sorry but I dont understand how the U-boat celebrates Hitler?"

Well, what does it do?

At a cost of millions of pounds to showcase the innards of an old rusty German submarine what is it doing?

Can our illustrious council not think of something more fitting for local pride than showcasing a Nazi sub that stands for everything millions of British soldiers died fighting against?

Is the best reason for spending millions of pounds on this hunk o junk to give liverpudlians some reason to come to Wirral? Can we not give them a better reason to come here? Perhaps they could visit our extensive library and leisure network?

I see the U-boat as a peice of social history and a reminder of a very dark time in Europe and the rest of the world. It is important that we remember. Five members of my family in the Merch, died in U-boat attacks.

I did prefer it in it's old setting though, and with the rust! I have not paid to see it once, since it was moved.

By the way Glen, I said tourists TO Liverpool, not FROM Liverpool. Visitor numbers to Liverpool continue to rise every year.

Maybe we should raise one of the merchant ships that were destroyed by these killing machines to remind us better of what really happened. This sub is really doing this area no good at all.

Merseytravel, by their own admission, spent 4.3 million quid on the U534 project. I personally would like to have seen that 4.3 million ploughed into public transport. Isn`t that what Merseytravel are supposed to do? Who gave them permission to venture into the world of tourist attractions using public money? and that includes Beatles museums, Space Ports and statues of Ken Dodd. What next Mr Scales, a Zeplin transfering staff from Hatton Garden to Beetham Court and back again?
