Can’t understand hands-off car park policy

Following a trip to Asda Woodchurch today, Friday, we spotted a young child left strapped in an unattended minivan in the car park.

The child was only about one-year-old, was waking from a sleep, wearing a warm coat and there appeared to be no windows open on a warm day.

I returned to the store to notify them but an Asda customer service clerk stated they could not interfere with children left in a car. Even after explaining it was a little baby, left alone in a vehicle, they reiterated they could not intervene in any way, not even to Tannoy the owner.

I would like to know, are there any laws against leaving children unattended? A number of dangers were posing a threat to the well-being of the child. It only takes a couple of minutes to “nip to the bank” but it takes less than a minute to snatch a child. In these circumstances it wouldn’t take long for a young child to overheat. Can Asda’s policy be correct? What other offences would they stand aside for and not intervene? What about the “Every Child Matters”’ strategy!

You should have taken the number and contacted the Police and Social Services.

Regardless of what should have been done I am also curious as to asda's stance on the matter and what other offences would they stand aside for and not intervene. I think the globe should follow this up.

In case anyone is interested, this was followed up in an email (by someone who shall remain nameless ;)) and the following reply received by email:

"Thanks for your recent email to our service team. I'm grateful you've taken the time to tell me the recent report in your local newspaper from one of our customers who visited our Arrowe Park store recently.

We recognise that providing legendary customer service is vital to our business and retaining the custom and loyalty of our customers. I cannot apologise enough, that this clearly did not happen on this occasion.

As we don't have a policy regarding these issues we do have a duty of care for all our customers. I am concerned that the colleague that was approached on this occasion offered no help whatsoever to the customer reporting this incident. The colleague should have announced a call over the stores tannoy system for the owner of the van to return and alerted our instore security team and the local police.

The points that has been raised in this article will help us to improve the levels of service at that store. I've added your feedback along with your details and these will be included in the weekly report we send to the store. The general store manager is responsible for taking the necessary action to prevent this from happening again.

Thanks again for writing to us. I'm confident there won't be any further repeat of this and whilst I realise your reluctance to shop with us at the moment, I hope you'll perhaps give us another try in the near future. It would be good to hear your feedback again, if you decide to do so. If I can be of any further help please let me know."
