The best bar gone

AFTER attending a meeting at Wallasey Town Hall as a member of the public recently, I was saddened to discover that what used to be known as Committee Room Five - The Brighton public house opposite - was not only closed for business, but boarded up.

For decades, The Brighton provided the perfect place for a relaxing drink, smoke and chat.

A real, down-to-earth drinking hole whose unique character was matched by many of the regulars.

In bygone times, councillors of all parties would laugh over a drink at the things they’d been arguing about just minutes earlier in the council chamber. Deals would be done, handshakes made, a few political careers given a leg up, perhaps a couple cut short, and no doubt a few scoops of both the written and liquid kind for the local journalists.

Alas no more.

Is this yet another victim of the smoking ban?

Name and address supplied.

More likely Foulkes thought it was a library. He seems to have difficulty telling the difference between those and places where you pay for goods, you see.

We are up to our neck in C*** caused by this rubbish council and all you have to worry about is a closed ale house, you must have it easy

Ray, I don't think you quite appreciate the point of the original letter writer!
