IN response to Evelyn Campbell Smith, the writer should check her Highway Code, where she will find that it is perfectly legal for cyclists to ride two abreast.
Indeed, when cycling in a small group such as that mentioned, it is probably safer for the cyclists to remain in pairs when possible, as it makes them more visible to stupid motorists.
The writer uses the expression “Imagine my shock”.
Well, can she imagine the cyclists’ shock? There they are minding their own business, and perfectly within the bounds of the Highway Code when a busybody starts “yelling” at them from within her car.
The writer is lucky she did not cause an accident.
Whether you like cyclists or not, they are EXTREMELY vulnerable road users and need to be given room and patience by motorists.
If a cyclist is startled and falls from their bike it could lead to a fatality and yet another husband, wife, son or daughter lost to the daily menace of speeding, impatient, and downright dangerous motorists.
We are not talking about a gang of hoodies here. This is four elderly cyclists enjoying a ride out together. This to me suggests that they are probably club cyclists, and as such are likely to be very experienced riders, well versed in the art of safe cycling.
Cyclists are not the problem on todays roads. When was the last time you read of a child or any other pedestrian being killed by a “dangerous” cyclist?
The writer should try cycling for a few days to see what cyclists have to put up with and maybe then she would realise the utter stupidity of what she did.
