WHEN I was a child and teenager and rode a bike, I was taught that two cyclists should never ride side by side.

Imagine my shock when in a queue going at snail's pace, from Heswall through Irby, to catch up finally with a group of four elderly cyclists, two lots riding side by side, taking up so much of the single lane that it was almost impossible for anyone to pass them safely.

As I drew up beside them, I rolled down my left window and yelled "Get into single file".

The two nearest to me yelled back angrily and actually banged their fists on my car.

What kind of example do these aged thugs think they are giving? Cyclists can make themselves unpopular as it is, but it is a long time since I have seen such a totally selfish attitude on a main road.
