Tunnel chaos: we need a faster, safer escape plan

WHEN acccidents happen - like last Wednesday night in the Wallasey Tunnel - why aren't barriers lifted to clear traffic in tunnels?

A two-hour queue and the whole of Liverpool city centre gridlocked isn't acceptable - it's what happens when you let a passenger transport authority try' and run the highway and police the roads at the same time.

The knock-on effects of a crash at the tunnels affect all of Merseytravel's services and users, not just tunnels, and everyone leaving work, so why not swallow the loss and clear the mess as fast and efficiently and lift the barriers for an hour and clear the traffic?

This will not only get the cars out quicker but also safer and prevent more accidents. If safety was Merseytravel's primary concern over money they would do this.

Another point - why allow cars to queue inside the tunnel? This puts thousands of drivers in a high risk situation - trapped in a tunnel and sitting on a tank full of petrol. Have they learned nothing about tunnel accidents like the Alps fires with 1000c temps and thick smoke and high deaths?

If the tunnels close they should aim to get both tunnels emptied immediately and their single concern must be safety, not profit. There must have been 1,500 vehicles stuck in one tunnel alone . . . that's how many people trapped?

Upon reaching the toll booths, we had only two manned and two auto booths open - this isn't enough in a two-mile rush hour jam. On the opposite side of the booths, all Liverpool-bound traffic was being re-routed back along the motorway - the U-turn made things even more messy by the pretend police' . They have two escape roads they could use for this - again it was a bottlenecked mess at the other end.

I'm sure the real police would do a better job of controlling the roads because this was a right botch-up'.

I appreciate accidents happen, but Merseytravel do little to make things safer or faster for people entering or exiting the city, whether using the actual tunnel or not.

You dont honestly think Merseytravel would open up the barriers and let all that revenue escape, do you.
Seriously though, its a disgrace that they consider a couple of hours revenue over tunnel users safety.

Sack Merseytravel and put this man in charge. He's spoken more sense in one letter than merseytravel have in 10 years.

The answer is simple: It is far safer for MerseyTravel to have the motorists trapped, than risk their profit margins and raise barriers. Cars soon build up and block the M53 motorway and Liverpool centre. Merseyside Police should demand they open the barriers immediately. A tunnel closure affects everyone as the ripple effect spreads through the county.

IMAGINE IF CARSLBERG RAN THE TUNNELS YOU WOULD GET TO THE BARRIERS TO FIND THEM OPEN WITH POLICE SAYING KEEP MOVING DONT STOP WE ARE TRYING TO CLEAR THE DELAY IN 20 MINUTES FLAT.

HOW VERY SENSIBLE AND UN BRITISH THOUGH AND UNTIL THEN WE WILL ALL SIT AND POLUTE THE ENVIROMENT WITH THOUSANDS OF ENGINES IDLING FOR HOURS. MERSEYTRAVEL- REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINTS ;)

Did you know, if both tunnels are closed at the same time, for any amount of time, then Wirral Council, the Hospital Trust, PCT and Western Cheshire PCT consider it a major incident. But hey what do Merseytravel care?

Almost immediately after the young man fell off the bridge I was in a queue at the Wallasey Tunnel. The traffic started moving after about quarter of an hour as staff diverted traffic through the tolls and through a side exit back onto the road system. I got as far as the toll booth but found myself sandwiched between two lorries. After some time a member of staff came up to me and told me that there had been a "jumper"and the lorries couldn't go through the Birkenhead tunnel, so I would have to wait until the tunnel reopened, after they had "removed him". I wasn't too upset as I thought this was obviously going to happen soon. After quite a while after that a young female staff member obviously felt sorry for me and made the lorry behind me move back, so that I could get out. If she hadn't done so I would have been stuck for at least an hour and a half. It was complete chaos and could have been handled much better. Although you cannot predict theses things happening, at least there should be plans to deal with for ups in cases like this.

Merseytravel themselves will never do anything to resolve these problems whilst we have weak council representation on their board. The answer is for the voting public to get rid of political party councillors on Wirral Council who are only interested in towing the party line. You only have to look at the gutless Lib Dems who abstained on the tunnel toll increase.

The people of Merseyside built the tunnels for future generations to use freely not to let greedy companies find ways of stealth taxing us. The powers that be in Merseyside need to hang their heads in shame how they allowed a Berlin Wall situation to arise dividing our county. These plans seem devious and carefully construcutred to ensure the tunnels will not be free until AT LEAST 2048 when a lot of people reading this will be dead. Worse still they seem content thinking we are happy-we are NOT. Capital Of Culture...don't make me laugh!

to lesley oxton who wrote one of the above posts, please have some consideration for the man who jumped off the bridge and his family and friends. this was a tradegy and has left people including myself devastated. i find comments like 'the jumper',&'removed him' totally unecessary. a young ill man has lost his life and you are moaning about being stuck in a traffic jam and say a staff member "obviously felt sorry for you". disgraceful.

To Debbie Newferry above, she showed more consideration than the suicide person did. At least he had his life in his own hands, unlike the motorists whos lives he thought nothing of before attempting to fly. its a miracle he didnt land on a car and kill someone like a young mum and toddler in a passing car. Do you understand he attempted to kill innocent people along with himself? It is HE who had no consideration now get real. Also why should a whole city be inconvenienced just becuase he had a bad day. I feel nothing for him as he thought nothing of us. I would have had more respect if he picked up a bottle of painkillers.
