SPEAKING as a retired school teacher, I have been following the teachers' dispute in the Globe with some interest.

The education people are making cuts for different reasons.

In order to prevent some cuts being required, they should turn to cuts which would prevent some vital areas being left alone.

The one cut I would make which would save vital funds is to do away with classroom assistants.

They were not used when I was teaching 40 lads to a class.

They are an expense to this system.

Give and take is always required in any situation.

Any teacher who needs assistance in the classroom should consider another job.

Classroom assistants are a luxury the profession cannot afford, so get rid and use the money while it can do more good.
