IT APPEARS from the volumes of correspondence in your letters section that we dogwalkers are the scourge of Wirral.

I recently received through my letterbox a pamphlet from my local Labour council candidate claiming, among his other achievements, “an improved Ridgewood Park.”

Now, this letter is not a political one, but one in defence of dogwalkers at said Ridgewood Park.

The improvements at Ridgewood Park appear to be an extra litter bin and two anti-dog-mess logos painted on to the pavement.

While walking my dog, I regularly notice large quantities of soft drink bottles and cans strewn about the field, especially after football matches.

This weekend – Bank Holiday – one pitch had 24 such containers discarded at halfway on both touchlines and in the goal area.

Along with these were several yards of plastic adhesive tape used to hold socks up.

Where are the “Clean it up” signs and “£1,000 fine” signs with pictures of footballers?

My late father, Ernie Wakelam, president of Heswall FC and ex-player with Pensby FC at Ridgewood Park in the 40s and 50s, will be turning in his grave at this disregard of playing areas by today’s players.
