MERSEYTRAVEL combined authority are proposing to take 217 guards off our local train services.
The role of the guard is that of keeping the train and its passengers safe and to carry out set procedures in the case of emergency.
The combined authority has on its board Labour councillors from Liverpool and Wirral.
This is one cut too far.
It will potentially put hundreds of lives at risk in particular disabled and the elderly citizens of our borough.
Could you imagine a train stopped in a single-bore tunnel that needs to be evacuated.
Without the guard, evacuation is extremely difficult, dangerous and a lot more time consuming.
STOP this madness. Wirral TUSC (Trade Union and Socialist Coalition) is standing seven candidates across our borough in the forthcoming May elections.
We say 'NO' to these cuts, stop the madness, invest in our people not demoralise them.
Keep the guards on all trains, safety must be of the most paramount importance.
Labour councillors are failing their constituents yet again. We say our citizens deserve more.
Phil Simpson, Secretary of Wirral TUSC
