THE cost of replacing the Swiss Bridge in Birkenhead Park would be more than offset by bringing back the job of park keeper on day or night patrol to look after the park itself and to deter and identify people who damage and misuse it.

The tenders for repairing the damage will see an escalation in the cited £20,000-plus costs and may not go to local contractors.

The keeper's job should include closing the park gates in the evenings to restrict access.

The original purpose of these gates was to reduce public access at certain times.

Many destroy the verges by their parking, littering and fouling areas of the park, which can’t then be safely used for play and for sports.

The result of this fouling is borne by the taxpayer and by the parks themselves.

It’s time people were paying for the degradation of an environment that we all share.

R Stothard, Birkenhead.
