REGARDING your recent article Tunnel users sold down river.

I see that Merseytravel's reply to the Mersey Tunnels Users Association claim that users of the tunnels have been sold down the river is that there is a task group which will "consider the options to reduce costs of tunnel tolls".

This is presumably the task group that on Joe Anderson's initiative was to be set up in February when he said he wanted to stop the profiting from tunnel-users.

That was eight months ago and it seems that this group has still not met.

In the meantime the city region in contradiction to what Mr Anderson said in February about tunnels profits, is asking the government for permission to use the tolls on "economic development and infrastructure throughout the city region."

Also seven months ago Phil Davies, the leader of Wirral Council, said that he hoped that the region could "make a decision to lift this huge burden" of the tolls.

He has now told the Globe that the city region has made devolution proposals "including local authority control over Mersey tunnels toll to help to improve 'the economic and social wellbeing of residents and communities'" and there is no mention of the promised end to profit-taking.

It is obvious that the Labour-run city region and the leader of Wirral Council have gone back on their pre-election promises.

We wait to see whether the Conservative government will honour their own pre-election pledges about reducing and removing tunnel tolls.
