I APPLAUD those at Wirral Council responsible for introducing the zero tolerance approach to dropping litter; I certainly hope that we can look forward to this continuing and our streets looking a lot cleaner in the future.

However can I ask why the same zeal has not been applied to the environmentally worse problem of irresponsible dog owners allowing their pets to foul pavements and playing fields?

I know that a recent anti-fouling poster campaign saw a small reduction, but when the posters were removed the problems returned.

Parents taking children to school have to navigate pavements covered with disgusting dog mess and it must be remembered that there are toxins in the faeces that can be dangerous for children.

The long-term solution must be to apply the same level of zero tolerance enforcement currently being applied to litter louts – so come on Wirral let's have some action.
