MY father was evacuated to Wales from the North End of Birkenhead after a bomb destroyed the family home.

Basically my father was a refugee.

I would urge all young people who have an issue with Britain taking in refugees to speak with people who lived during the Blitz.

Maybe then they would have an understanding of what it is like to live in war zone.

Last month I was lucky enough to attend a wedding in Budapest. While I was there I saw first hand the conditions of the refugees outside Budapest Keleti railway station. They are happy to be in Europe but the conditions in which they are living is appalling.

They have very little in the way of possessions, they have to sleep on concrete, the temperature reaches 38 C in the day time and there is very little shade.

They are not looking for handouts, they are just desperate people escaping conflict.

We can and we should do more to help.

I believe that the British are at heart compassionate and I urge you all to do all you can to help and to press your politicians to do more about this crisis.
