I READ with interest the letter from your anonymous contributor last week complaining that council staff had not been asked to contribute to a review by the chief executive.

Why were his or her views not solicited by their head of service ? Any organisation of size comparable to Wirral Council would have a system of regular team briefings during which feedback and suggestions would go both up and down the management hierarchy.

Good management starts with the right example from the top.

It is difficult to believe that the new chief did not say to his direct reports, “I want to meet with 30-plus senior managers to discuss how we can take the council forward.

In advance of this, I want each of those managers to meet with their team and obtain their ideas, which will then be fed to me when I meet with the managers.”

It is basic, but then most matters of common sense are basic.
