I DO not know where I heard this story, or whether there is any truth in it, but I heard the Birkenhead tunnel was paid off in the mid-80s.
However, as the Wallasey Tunnel cost was still outstanding, it was decided to keep the charge, estimated about another 20 years.
Around the year 2005 work needed to be done to both tunnels to bring them up to date, so this was then delayed further. Now let’s give them a generous ten years to do this.
With this in mind, and if there is any truth in this story, why are we considering paying an increase in the fees when we shouldn’t be paying anything at all?
And where does the other 40 years come from, announced recently in the Press?
Has anyone else heard this story?
