Why you should sign our tolls petition

JOHN Roberts asks Globe readers not to sign our petition to the Prime Minister (Mailbox, January 31).

He says that if tolls are scrapped it will cause untold damage' to the railway and that train jobs will be lost.

The people who use the train service on Merseyside are subsidised to the extent of about £100 million a year from taxes. Road users in Britain are not subsidised - they pay about £1,000 million a week in road taxes and get little back.

The Government and others want to tighten the screw on road users even further and it has just been announced that Manchester plans to introduce congestion charges' which could be up to £8 a day.

The Merseyside districts want to do something similar, but so far the Government has not given them any money for drawing up plans.

We believe that all these charges are unfair and damage the economy in the areas that are closest to the tolls.

If Globe readers agree with us, we ask that they sign the petition asking the PM to scrap all existing and planned tolls, road pricing' and congestion charging'. The petition is at: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/notolls As John Roberts wants tolls kept, perhaps he can start a petition to that effect?

We already pay far too much in council tax and road and fuel taxes. When the Mersey tunnel was first built it was promised it would be free eventually The government and local authority concerned should be made to honour that promise and the tunnels, including the Wallasey tunnel, should be taken back in to public ownership

When the Mersey tunnel was first built we were promised that it would be free The government and councils concerned should be made to honour this promise and it should also include the Wallasey tunnel

Dont think Merseytravel will relinquish control of the tunnels without a fight.....they make too much money out of them. I always understood the the tunnels charter promised that tolls would be scrapped when the debt was paid off...I assume Merseytravel are responsible for that debt and the question that should be asked is why has that debt not been paid with the huge income it makes....probably because Merseytravel use the profits for other projects.
