I WOULD like to congratulate Emma Rigby on her thought-provoking article in January 28's edition of the Globe on the proposed demolition of buildings and the sale of land on the site of the former Rock Ferry High School.

Congratulations too to Sue Dodd and Alison Meehan for their work in not only trying to save the two historic buildings but also in battling to preserve what they correctly describe as Rock Ferry's "last green space".

I suspect few schools on Wirral have suffered the hammer-blows (literally in some instances) that have befallen this remarkable school.

The 70s saw Rock Ferry High School evolve from a grammar school into an all-ability place of learning, a change which saw a huge increase in the number of boys attending the school.

The school motto – "Remis Velisque" – interpreted as 'With oars and sails' – instructed every pupil to approach every task with all possible heart and effort – most did.

I suspect that, despite the efforts of the Save Rock Ferry High School campaign, there is no 11th-hour salvation in the offing.
