YOU recently published a letter from the Merseytravel deputy chief executive and director of integrated transport services.

He says that no decision has yet been made on a tolls increase.

That may be so. But Merseytravel, when drawing up their budget, seems to anticipate toll increases and have already said that "improving economic growth is such that a further increase in cash toll is justified".

We would urge Globe readers to contact councillors to oppose any increase. If they wait till the Merseytravel budget meeting in February, it will probably be too late.

Merseytravel say that tolls are spent on maintenance and repayment of debt. What they fail to mention is that because the tolls are so high (the third highest in Britain), Merseytravel make a big profit on the tunnels. For the financial year ending in March, they are forecast to transfer some £13.4 million of toll payers money into their general coffers.

We suggest that if Globe readers want to know the facts, then they should also visit the MTUA website.
