LAST week will go down as the week David Cameron discovered the world economy.

For nearly five years he has asserted in practically every interview that “Labour crashed our economy. The Tories are clearing up the mess.”

The idea  Labour just happened to be in power at a time when the bankers – in Europe, the USA and the UK – crashed the world economy is brushed aside.  Labour alone were responsible.

Now suddenly, as the Tories come closer to being exposed for the failure of their austerity policies, the red lights are flashing on the dashboard of the world economy.

“It wasn’t me guv – it was the world economy what failed!” When the Tories got into power, propped up by Nick Clegg, they immediately insisted the whole deficit had to cut in just five years or else the world would end.  Austerity was our salvation.

They set in train unprecedented cuts in public spending; slashing jobs, wages and services, and grinding the economy to a halt for three years.

But despite doubling the cuts, far from eliminating the deficit in just five years, George Osborne hasn’t even achieved the Labour target of halving it.
