I WOULD like to know why the Wirral Globe spent its time praising the success of The Open 2014 instead of asking difficult questions, as any true journalist would, of Wirral Council about the costs of hosting this event.
The council has spent public funds painting new road markings, arranging street cleaning and litter collections, and requisitioning public playing fields to turn into car parks.
Do we know how much this has cost, and how expenditure balances against income from the event?
Will residents and local communities see any benefits?
Will we have to wait another eight years before the streets are cleaned?
Did we get value for money?
How does all of this match up against stories like this – Wirral Council cuts 500 jobs.
If the Globe considers itself a real newspaper, it should be asking these questions.
Dr Stephen Tapril, West Kirby.
