AS your correspondent Diane Buxton points out, the residents of Wirral are fortunate in having so many amenities on our doorsteps – beaches, long coastal area, fine parks, rural walking areas, easy access into Wales, the Lake District etc.

This scene sadly can be ruined by the "selfish minority" with their dog-fouling, fly-tipping.

And alleyway-dumping.

How to deal with these problems is difficult and they can never be eliminated, only reduced.

As regards dumping, as many people do not have cars and will not phone the council, may I suggest that the council on Saturdays place skips in the most affected areas where residents can place old furniture, mattresses etc.

As regards litter dropping on the pavements may I suggest people serving community order sentences be sent out to pick the litter up – I have seen prison gangs in the USA doing just that.

As for dog-fouling, I cannot think of any way of dealing with such owners – fines seem to have no effect – confiscation of the dog would be the only punishment which would hit hard.
