READING about Byrne Avenue baths in the Wirral Globe has brought back some very happy memories to me, particularly the boxing matches which were held there every month during the winter in the immediate post-war period.

This was made possible because the swimming pool and the balcony around it could be covered with floorboards.

My involvement with the sport began when I joined the Air Training Corps in 1945 at the age of 14.

Following on from this, I decided to join Birkenhead boxing club, the most famous member to come out of our club was Wally Thom, who won the British Welterweight title in 1951.

I continued to box at Byrne Avenue until I was called up for National Service into the RAF and represented the RAF against a team from the American Air Force.

Happy days!

I wonder if anyone else can recall watching or taking part in these boxing matches at Byrne Avenue Baths?
