Unworkable parent leave

PROPOSALS by Nick Clegg to alter parental leave rules are unworkable..

The Deputy Prime Minister believes the current system allowing a father to only take two weeks paternity leave is ‘old fashioned’ and proposes parents share 52 weeks leave.

This idea could only come from a completely out of touch politician who has never worked in the real world.

The government should be helping businesses flourish, not add to the miles of red tape that is strangling them.

This proposal will harm businesses, particularly smaller ones and will prove unworkable.

And it hardly ties in with the recently announced plans to encourage breast feeding with vouchers.

New mums can hardly breast-feed - as everyone knows is best - if they've gone back to work after a fortnight leaving dad in charge.

It may not suit this government and their pursuit of the equality agenda but men and women are inherently different.

Fathers can be fantastic house husbands but the reality is that caring for babies comes much more instinctively to women.

Of course they should go back to work as soon as they want but most women want to stay with their new baby and Clegg's proposals will cause terrible uncertainty and expense for business.

Your also forgetting people who adopt their children including same-sex couples. Your letter therefore makes little sense to me and perhaps a little sterotypical?

There does need to be a way to share leave to enable parents to spend that quality time with their child but also manage a career as well.

Well Mr Nutty, you are so out of touch it is unbelievable. I was a stay at home dad and my daughter is doing pretty well at the moment but there are a couple of things you said I would like to respond to please:

You never heard of a breast pump?? Mum expresses milk to put in a bottle and dad feeds baby with expressed breast milk out of a bottle.

Not always. My beloved wife suffered terribly with detachment from our daughter when she was born so it was me who did most of the 'caring' part. Thankfully treatment was sought and found and we got sorted, but it was me who stayed at home while the wife went to work as she could not cope with the rigors of motherhood. My wife and daughter now get on amazing but it could have gone so differently.

As for the current Paternity pay, we get 2 weeks paid Ordinary Paternity Leave and an extra 26 weeks paid if mum goes back to work, so the option is there. Better than 14 years ago when I got nothing at all.

As with the previous 2 posts, all you are proving Mr Nuttall is that you and your party as usual are not as in touch with the people as you like to think, I personally find your comments outdated and offensive, epscially as I did the majority of childcare for my eldest.

Your a politician that accepts the gravy train of Brussels while telling people your against it, hyprocosy should be your middle name.

I`m with Paul Nuttal on this, it is unfair on certain employers who get no payroll support for the maternity/paternity leave, and also adds more pressure to work colleagues who have to absorb the extra work load whilst they are out of the business.

Why should parents get paid leave now, it is a life choice to start a family and there are various tax credits and child benefits they will get. Statutory maternity pay is currently 39 weeks to a max of 52, on top of child benefit, free prescriptions, dental care and sure start to name a few, they even get closer parking spaces than disabled people at some supermarkets.

I often hear soon to be parents in work crying about how they will get on with reduced pay, whilst established parents tell me they use their child benefit to pay for petrol!?!?

Well you made that decision to have a child, so get on with it.
