Plea to MPs: Show your support for Wirral Council's 'New Belongings' scheme
1:15pm Tuesday 10th September 2013 in Letters
IT IS rare indeed that Wirral Council deserves praise.
The participation of Wirral in the "New Belongings" programme to support youngsters leaving care is most welcome.
The neglect of these young people has been a running sore for decades under all governments and has cost us dear in addition.
The Centre for Policy Studies report "Handle With Care" showed that within two years: 50% of care leavers will be unemployed; 20% will be homeless; 35% will be lone mothers or pregnant and a care leaver is 25 times more likely to end in prison.
These kids are not innately criminal just abandoned, desperate and vulnerable.
Remember we have also seen recently how organised paedophile gangs prey on young girls even during "state care."
This is an old, old story.
Even if we have no compassion for these vulnerable children, self interest demands that we support schemes like "New Belongings."
I urge our local MPs to give their active encouragement to the council.
