Taxi driver's shock at treatment of pregnant Wirral mum
2:00pm Monday 19th August 2013 in Letters
I AM a taxi driver and today I drove a young lady who was eight months' pregnant.
She was coming out of a local charity shop which had given her items she needed.
She had worked since she left school until giving up recently to have her baby.
Around three weeks ago she was investigated by the benefits agency - firstly for allegedly working on the side as a sports instructor, even though she was heavily pregnant and in no way could do any sports.
Then she was told she was an illegal immigrant so was not entitled to any benefit – yet she was able to prove she was born, lived and worked in this country and was not arrested, but her benefit still has been stopped.
For weeks she has had no money and when she applied for a crisis loan this was refused.
I left that young lady with anger and tears thinking, is this the way we should be treating heavily pregnant young mums?
