Stop bashing civil servants

I WOULD like to respond to L Spencer's letter in your edition dated Wednesday, March 13.

There seems to be a tendency to tar all civil servants with the same brush.

May I point out that while councils may well be out of touch with hard-pressed council tax-paying citizens (some of whom are also civil servants that also pay income tax), but the government that is not "in it together" with us.

Not all civil servants have greater job security than the private sector, and concerning final salary pensions, only if your wages are likely to keep up, never mind exceed the rate of inflation is this something to look forward to, but unlikely as most civil servants wages are on a constant pay freeze, amounting to pay cuts due to inflation.

Also the private sector traditionally earn more for the a similar roll of that in the civil service and have the choice of what pension they wish. Whereas our conditions are changed, whether we like it or not.

Simply put, look to the top with your criticisms, not all of us have gold plated pension schemes and ever increasing bonus's like the bankers, most civil servants are struggling the same as everyone else.

I work for the public sector, and far from our jobs being (as once might have been the case) more secure than the private sector, each passing day seems to bring a new set of transgressions for which one can be disciplined. Ministers and management know full well that because few public employees will leave a good job unless they have another one to go to, they can treat you like dirt.

At present, with unions unsure as to how to react to the government's refusal to negotiate over pay, pensions and other conditions, there's very little that civil servants and council workers can do to fight back against what are in many cases, rank bad employers.

So L. Spencer, and those others who are comfortable with their tabloid-generated stereotypes of public sector workers can rest easy.
