Campaign to keep Wirral bowling greens

First published in Letters

THERE is a lot of talk that our so called council is about to halt the upkeep of the bowling greens due to cost - this being the case, will they also be stopping the upkeep of their golf courses by closing these down as well?

I feel the public and the bowling leagues should do as they did when the council was threatening to close our libraries and get our local MPs involved or by getting in touch with the minister of sport (if we still have one).

Bowling involves a lot of people, young and old, for most of the summer and quite a few in the winter.

For the council to want to wipe their hands of this matter is a disgrace.

R Knight, Irby.

Looking at the state of the golf courses, you wouldn't know they were being maintained. I've never a seen them so bad in all the years i've played the game. It's a matter of time before they are closed due to a lack of players. 67 people played at Brackenwood on a saturday during the summer and this is due to the very poor condition of all the council courses.

Must be the councils fault all of the rain we had this summer to then? Do you have any idea about water tables. Land drainage etc? Council parks and countryside staff have worked so hard under during the 'summer washout' and continue to work hard as all council employees are even when threatened with mass redundancy! Sorry if the golf courses were wet!

So if the course is wet and they can't cut etc, then why don't the staff use their spare time to rake bunkers etc, It's not just down to them being wet. The courses are a disgrace and it's no wonder people are staying away. It's funny how all the private courses that i chose to play on the wirral are in prime condition when it's rained so much this summer. Looks to me like lazy staff on the council courses if you ask me.

Maybe your correct. They should change ALL staff around! Sometimes people can get stuck in a rut. Literally. Hopefully things will improve. Have you complained?

I'm sick of complaining without any improvements, so I now chose to play private for the same cost as a council course. It's a pity cos wirral has some lovely courses.
