Cut councillors and save money

I TOTALLY agree with the e-mail by your reader GL "Cut the number of councillors" in this week's Wirral Globe.
According to the Wirral Council website, these councillors cost in excess of £600,000 for the year 2011/12.
While the chief executive is looking to cancel existing conditions of service for council employees, perhaps he would like to look at the allowances paid to councillors at the same time.
I'm sure a saving could be made.
