Put in some effort with your 'Guys'

BONFIRE night is approaching, and with it the children collecting “Penny for the Guy".

Now, brushing aside the anti-social aspect and illegalities surrounding begging, I like a bit of tradition.

But please, children, put some effort into it.

The teddy bear dressed in a bin-liner with an elastic band round his neck is not a Guy.

The teddy bear dressed in your little brother's tracksuit with a plastic mask is not a Guy.

Whatever happened to hand-made papier-mâché faces gaudily painted, attached to a person-shaped collection of old clothes stuffed with old tights?

There's no imagination or creativity any more. I'd be happy to give you some pocket money for the pleasure of looking at your artistic creation. But do put some effort in, please!

Begging a full two weeks before Bommy Night...before even Hallowe'en is out of the way... is just not the done thing, either.

I know the kids down town where a bit miffed when they asked me 'penny for the guy' so I gave them a quid and took the guy.

Personally I thought it was a good return for my money

I personally like 'Penny for the Guy' not that I am justifying begging. It's a good british tradition and there is not much of that today!
