THE strange plan to build a golf resort and housing estate on open green belt land reminds me of another proposal ten years ago from a council-backed developer.

He wanted to build a luxury hotel on the car park below Morrisons in West Kirby to ‘promote tourism’.

For obvious reasons it was not wanted by local people or the many day visitors but we had to view plans in the concourse and attend meetings in order to voice our objections.

In the end, the idea was abandoned when it became clear that it was never a feasible proposition and that it could have been a disaster for the developer.

Now, in spite of what seems like unanimous opposition locally, including, I am told, from our MP, we are threatened with this golf resort.

I should be interested to know why would benefit should such a destructive and short-sighted scheme be allowed.

We are not exactly short of golf facilities in Wirral nor do we need more luxury homes, which apparently have to be built to support this commercial enterprise.

But we do need to preserve our open spaces, especially the green belt, for the future are entitled to its protection by the council.

The green belt is hardly just a local issue nor a party political one and I hope that residents' views are considered and that no more money is wasted by this 'cash strapped' council on promoting this scheme.
