I WAS interested, if not a little perplexed, to see in the Globe that among Labour leader of the council Phil Davies' priorities for Wirral are both to "protect the greenbelt" and "progress the Hoylake Golf Resort".

Surely these aims are completely contradictory?

I believe that several Labour candidates in the recent local election expressed their opposition to the Hoylake Golf Resort but unfortunately, now they are elected, and despite what the electorate expected of them, have gone very quiet on the issue due to the Labour whip that threatens them with disciplinary action if they do not tow the line.

The planning committee now comprises seven Labour members, also subject to the whip, and six members from other parties, and the Labour members will clearly vote and thus make majority decisions according to what the leadership requires.

Developers must be rubbing their hands in glee.

Democracy at work? I think not.
