IN response to the recent letter Railway rubbish 'terrible advert' to Wirral travellers.
I read your recent letter from K Lyons regarding rubbish on the network with a shared sense of frustration and hope I can provide some assurance that this is being dealt with in partnership with Network Rail, who are responsible for the maintenance of our tracks, including the rubbish on the trackside.
A spokesperson from Network Rail has said: "We are committed to tackling fly-tipping on the railway.
"It's a criminal offence carrying a fine of up to £1000 and can be really dangerous to those dumping the rubbish and to our staff who have to clear it up.
“We are aware of fly-tipping on the Wirral line and our maintenance team is putting in place a plan to tackle the problem.
"In the meantime, anyone with information about fly-tipping should contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40."
As you correctly stated, there are people who continue to fly-tip along the Merseyrail network despite the penalties associated with this criminal offence.
Merseyrail and Network Rail will continue to work towards an improved process for managing this.
Andy Heath, managing director, Merseyrail
